What do you think when you hear the word “charity”? Did you know that many public services, small enterprises, and community facilities were delivered by the charity sector? Would you be surprised to hear that there are almost 12,000 charities nationwide across a range of areas? During this session, participants will gain an understanding of the sector, its economic value and role in partnership in the delivery of State services. They will also hear of some key policy and legislative updates, including the new social enterprise policy; the role of philanthropy, and the Charities (Amendment) legislation.

The Wheel

Colette Bennett

Colette joined the Wheel as Director of Advocacy and Research in 2023 after 14 years working at a senior level in justice advocacy and organisational development. Colette has a Masters in Social Justice and Public Policy, and is a qualified solicitor with a professional certificate from the Law Society of Ireland.

Colette is a member of the Royal Irish Academy Social Sciences Committee. She has provided guest lectures for Trinity College Dublin, DCU, ATU and SETU; seminar inputs; and training on a range of social policy areas including the Budget, poverty in Ireland, housing, the Global South, the SDGs and public participation.

Colette is also a frequent contributor to TV, radio and print media.

In her spare time, Colette enjoys cooking, hiking, kayaking, and hanging out with family.
