Inheritance tax is one of the areas where good proactive advice makes the biggest difference to clients, and where the cost of getting it wrong is highest. With Capital Acquisitions Tax charged at 33% and thresholds that have not kept pace with rising asset and property values, more and more families are being drawn into the net, and accountants are increasingly the first person clients turn to for answers. This session focuses on what actually works in practice: how to secure the key reliefs, structure transfers efficiently, and plan ahead so clients keep more of what they pass on. Attendees will leave with practical planning ideas that add real value to clients.
- Mairead Hennessy will cover the following topics during this webinar:
The CAT planning framework: thresholds, valuation dates and the exemptions (small gift and spousal) that underpin every effective plan, and why timing matters.
- Agricultural and Business Relief as planning tools: securing the 90% reduction, meeting the conditions, avoiding clawback traps, and pre-transfer restructuring.
- Structuring transfers using trusts: discretionary, bare and fixed trusts compared, the discretionary trust tax regime, and how trusts can be used to facilitate reliefs such as Dwelling House Relief, protect vulnerable beneficiaries etc
- Family partnerships: transferring wealth to the next generation in a controlled way while parents retain decision-making authority, and how future growth can be moved outside the taxable estate.
- Effective planning: the CGT/CAT credit, and sequencing gifts and inheritances to minimise the overall charge.
By attending this session attendees will be able to identify the CAT reliefs available to their clients and the conditions attaching to each, structure lifetime and on-death transfers to reduce exposure, recognise and avoid the clawback pitfalls that catch clients out, and advise effectively on how to fund a CAT liability where an estate is asset-rich but cash-poor.
The session will be of most interest to accountants and tax advisers in practice, as well as those advising business owners, farmers and high-net-worth individuals on succession and estate planning.
