Charities, in Ireland, are vulnerable clients, as any perceived issue of non-compliance can detrimentally impact upon their future existence.  Accountants need to be aware and familiar with the changing landscape of the regulations set out by the Charity Regulator. 

This session aims to highlight the changes in the sector, accounting standards, the Charity's code and corporate governance issues impacting on charities.  Attendees will be brought up to date and will be able to use their knowledge to identify areas of concern for their clients. 

In this session, Mark Finan covers the following:

• Key legislation: The major pieces of legislation governing Charities will be outlined and the major changes will be highlighted.
• Boards - duties and responsibilities: It is more than likely that an accountant will be instructed by the Board of the Charity.  This section will deal with the main duties and responsibilities of Board members and the Board collectively.
• Offences: The common pitfalls for charities.  How can an individual Board member be liable?  Moving from volunteer to professional Board.  Stakeholders.
• Best Practice: Charities governance code.  A quick whistlestop tour of the Code.  This must be completed annually and is an area whereby accountants can assist charities in completing. 
• Ethical concerns: Issues that may arise for the Board.  The Constitution of the Charity vs. founders.
