In May 2024 the EU adopted its most far-reaching package of anti-money laundering reforms to date, and the new rules take effect in 2027. For the first time, a single AML Regulation will apply directly across all Member States, backed by the 6th AML Directive and a new EU supervisory body, AMLA. Accountants, auditors and tax advisers are all obliged entities under the new framework, and the changes will reshape daily practice in areas such as customer due diligence, beneficial ownership, governance, suspicious activity reporting and record retention.

The obligations are demanding and detailed, and they cannot be implemented overnight. Firms that wait until the rules bite will face a rushed and costly remediation exercise across their entire client portfolio. This session gives practitioners a clear, practical head start. You will come away understanding what is changing, where your current framework is likely to fall short, and the concrete steps to take now. For your practice, early preparation means lower compliance costs, stronger governance and reduced regulatory risk. For your clients, it means an adviser who can guide them confidently through their own obligations under the new regime.

Lungi Sepotokele covers the following topics during this course:

  • A practical preparation roadmap: mapping your compliance gaps, categorising your client portfolio, educating clients, making use of forthcoming AMLA standards and guidelines, and working with your professional body.

  • Data, systems and processes: the expanded obligations around client data collection and security, the risks of relying on external data providers, and why box-ticking and checklists alone will not amount to compliance.
